Ambatolampy has lots of water sources, so as well as growing maize, rice and fruit they also farm trout. The region's honey is also famous. The town can boast about its local specialties: the beekeepers are excellent and some families have been passing down their metalworking knowledge for centuries. They have gone from making arms to making kitchen utensils and artistic objects in aluminium, bronze and copper.
The town has an interesting Museum of Insects: you can find grasshoppers and tarantulas, as well as about 6,000 insect species from all over the world.
Don't forget to explore the magnificent Ankaratra massifwhich has several peaks that exceed 2,000 metres. Why not try to climb the 2,643 metres of "the one that is never free of the clouds": Mount Tsiafajarona, the third highest on the island and a chance to have a magnificent trek on Madagascar ?
