Ambatolampy has lots of water sources, so as well as growing maize, rice and fruit they also farm trout. The region's honey is also famous. The town can boast about its local specialties: the beekeepers are excellent and some families have been passing down their metalworking knowledge for centuries. They have gone from making arms to making kitchen utensils and artistic objects in aluminium, bronze and copper. The town has an interesting Museum of Insects: you can find grasshoppers and tarantulas, as well as about 6,000 insect species from all over the world.
