The original name of "picture gallery" was replaced by "Pinacoteca Vaticana" This museums department was opened in 1932 and has a phenomenal number of paintings!
In the Pinacoteca, you will go through fifteen rooms, where paintings are exhibited and displayed in an organised way. They are set out in chronological order and by theme. Obviously most of the paintings are religious paintings from the 9th century to the 19th century! Perfect for observing the changes in technique, style and colour. I like to compare them, to look at how there were drawings or sculptures of naked men which were censored years later!
Famous artists of the Baroque and Renaissance periods are can be seen here. You can see paintings by Raphael, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Titian and many others. In a nutshell, a must-see destination during your visit to the Vatican. If you have already seen these paintings in magazines, believe me, seeing them face to face is to see them afresh in all their splendour. A real treat!
