Brazil: Precautions for traveling safely

Due to social disparities in the country, there are moments of tension and security problems can arise. Even so, tourists can have a fun, carefree time by taking certain precautions to help them go unnoticed.

Don't be a temptation to others

Whilst on vacation in Brazil, do your best to blend into the crowd. Don't walk around wearing valuable objets - watches, bracelets etc, - that could be sold on, as you may become a target for pickpockets. It's also wise to leave your handbag at your hotel. Carry a bit of cash in your pockets - and a small amount at that. Another option is to invest in a fanny pack.

If you want your camera on you, carry it in a plastic bag, which will be less conspicuous.

Hotels do sometimes get burgled, so make sure your baggage is locked and leave any important documents (passport, visa etc.) in a secure place. Be warned that sometimes room safes are not always the best option!

Be on your guard, but don't get paranoid.

When staying in Brazil's big cities, stick to areas that are busy ; remember that it's easy to turn a corner and suddenly find yourself in a favela without realising it. Generally, Brazilians will point you in the right direction, so don't panic!

Highway patrol car

The best way to enjoy your vacation in Brazil is to loosen up and act relaxed. If you appear too anxious or stressed you may draw attention from people with bad intentions.

So breathe easy and enjoy the adventure you're about to have in an amazing country full of welcoming people.
