Situated on the border between South Australia and Victoria, to the north of Mount Gambier, Coonawarra is a wine-producing region famous for its premium red wines.

My suggestion:
There is only one reason to visit Coonawarra: its wine. You can visit the whole region in one day.
My review

Coonawarra is the main wine-producing region of the Limestone Coast The red wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, have won many prestigious awards. One advantage of the Coonawarra region is its small size (around 40 square kilometres). With more than 20 vineyards open for tastings, you don't have to spend all day in the car.

For me, the most interesting vineyard is Katnook Estate, with its old stone buildings, quite a rarity in Australia. The owners welcomed us and offered tastings of high-end wine, because they know visitors will then want to buy it!

Like most towns in Australia, the town comes to life for horse racing. The Coonawarra Cup held in January every year, attracts more than 3,000 people.
