- Art & Culture
Located on the Tropic of Capricorn, this town was founded in the middle of the 19th century. The whole region has a bad reputation because of the pollution that its ports bring to the Great Barrier Reef. Farming and mining activities are particularly dangerous for the sea beds.
If you want to have a good walk, stay in the town centre and walk along the River Fitzroy. The town has some beautiful Victorian buildings, like the postal sorting office.
There are other local attractions: the Aboriginal Dreamtime Cultural Centre and Koorana crocodile farm.
Finally, if you don't find Australian towns fascinating (which I understand) then choose to stay on one of the little islands. I fell in love with Heron Island, whose small infrastructure has been built with respect for the environment. The islands are a paradise for diving, stand-up paddle, or simply for swimming and exploring.
