Argentina

Argentina, a land of contrasts

Argentina is a country of contrasts, from the high mountains of the Andes in the west, the Atlantic ocean in the east to the plains between the two.

Geography

Argentina is divided into four distinct geographic zones, each having its own climate and also its own flora and fauna. This can help you choose where to go during your trip to Argentina.

The first zone is the Andes Mountain Range, characterised by high plateaux, between 3,000 and 4,000 metres, with peaks as high as 6,000 m.

The second is the Pampas, characterised by the great plains in the centre of the country, covered with grass and wilderness. It is famous for supplying the best quality meat in the country.

The third is Patagonia, a high, dry plain, the most well-known region of Argentina, including Tierra del Fuego in the far south.

The fourth, Chaco, is also characterised by large plains but is different from the Pampas due to the large number of trees and forests.

Climate

Given the size and the formation of the country, Argentina has a variety of climates. In general you might say that it is fairly mild, but this varies a lot in different places. The geographic zones have their own climate.

The north is mostly tropical. The Pampas has a semi-arid temperate climate. Patagonia has a climate that is more polar, dry and icy cold. Chaco has two main seasons, a dry winter and a rainy summer.

Fauna and flora

Due to its size, Argentina has an enormous variety of fauna and flora. Numerous national parks have been created to protect this diversity.

Some species are found all over the country, such as the puma. Others vary in relation to climate, and so are only found in a particular area. In Chaco, for example, there are a large number of feline predators.

As for Patagonia, it has a lot of marine mammals off its coast (whales, dolphins, etc.) and is worth a detour during a trip to Argentina.

Humans have also introduced numerous species, such as boar, deer, elk...
