I really liked the reserve's dunes and beach, very wild and preserved. We came across antelopes (lots of bonteboks) and mountain zebras from the region It's a different approach from safaris, I felt closer to nature as you can visit on foot or by bike. Take a good map from the reception, and if you can, stay overnight. 
I booked a cottage with friends, completely equipped, in the public campsite, but you must have a car and buy supplies before you arrive! I enjoyed the deserted beach.
The De Hoop Nature Reserce, is not really a necessary stop in South Africa but a pleasant stop if you take the time, a very "natural" area, good for families as the activities lend themselves to them.
