Russian dolls and other treasures

When you're travelling in Russia, you can treat yourself to an iconic Russian doll and other souvenirs from the land of the Tsars.

The famous Russian dolls and other great classics

As a child, I was fascinated by the Russian dolls that belonged to my big sister. If you too like these attractive dolls which fit one inside the other, now is the time to buy yourself one. They are called 'matrioshki' in Russian and are a great gift idea. Russia is full of small wooden ornaments, jewellery boxes, handmade rag dolls and samovars (a sort of fancy kettle for making tea). There are also a lot of porcelain ornaments available, particularly in St Petersburg.

Clothing, fabrics and jewellery

You could buy yourself a chapka, if you haven't already, to beat the cold. You'll also find beautiful shawls and embroidered table cloths. And if you swear by a fur coat when winter comes, now is the time to invest in one!

You can also shower your family and friends with jewellery. There is a lot of amber jewellery in Russia and you could even invest in some semi-precious stones.

Russian monument

For collectors...

Of course, there are still a lot of relics from the old Soviet Army. There are coats, caps and watches to tempt the avid collector and souvenir hunters among you.

...and for the foodies!

Stock up on delicious blinis in the markets as well as Russian cakes and kvass, the most Russian of Russian drinks. Kvass is made from rye bread or black bread, spring water and herbs. It is also sometimes flavoured with berries, cereals or beetroot. It's slightly sparkling and very satisfying. Try it during your stay and bring some back for your friends to try. Don't forget to bring back a couple of bottles of Russian vodka. Lastly, if you've still got money to spend, buy a small tin of the famous caviar.

A tip: if you're short of time to do your souvenir shopping, go to the bazaar in Red Square where you'll find all the Russian souvenirs you could possibly imagine. On the other hand, because it's in the city centre, expect prices to be slightly higher than elsewhere.
