A wonderful lake in the Cordillera Huayhuash mountain range (located in the Ancash region), and often the first camping stop for those doing the trek.

My suggestion:
When you camp here you'll be sleeping at an altitude of 4,000 metres each night, suffice to say it's freezing cold. On the advice of a friend, I made myself a kind of sleeping bag liner and a huge collar out of a fleece (these can be bought at the market for a few Peruvian soles) – it turned out to be a brilliant idea!
My review

Lake Mitucocha forms the first stage of the magnificent Huayhuash trek, which is something you absolutely have to include on your tripif you're a mountain lover.

The first day of the walk is fairly easy in terms of distance covered (around ten kilometres). However, it can be challenging if you haven't first acclimatised yourself to the altitude by doing a few preliminary walks, in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range for example. When I did this walk, this introductory section was slightly spoiled by the rain (I was lucky enough not to have a single overcast day for the rest of the trek however), but I could already see that the landscape I was passing through was something special. And that was only the start. You'll discover, as you proceed along the route, that the scenery is quite simply out of this world.
