Llahuar (Peru)

We discovered the little hamlet of Llahuar on a three-day trek through the Colca Canyon. 

To describe this trek as physically challenging would be an understatement. The trail plots a severely rising and falling course through the Colca Valley. Fortunately, the spectacular scenery you pass through along the way compensates for the difficult sections. We were walking for seven hours a day at a sustained pace and our legs, aching from the many climbs and descents, were feeling heavy. And that's without mentioning the sense of vertigo that suddenly overtook us at times: Colca Canyon is the world's second deepest canyon!

On the advice of a French couple, we stopped off at Llahuar. With hot springs all around it, a spot of bathing in the pools at this quiet, peaceful place in the Colca Valley offers the perfect way to rest and relax. To the great disappointment of those who like fishing for trout in the Rio Colca, geysers, verdant gorges, indigenous communities, traditional villages and mischievous llamas are what await you on this demanding hike, which has left us with some of the most beautiful memories we have of our trip to Peru.
