Jabal Akhdar is a mountainous region located approximately 2 hours' drive from Muscat. It's a magnificent place, between mountains and greenery, where the sun and the heat seem to have spared cultivation and vegetation.

Jebel Shams is the highest point in Oman, at an altitude of 3,000 m. It's a site dedicated to hikers, but also suitable for those wishing to admire the scenery without the long walks.

Jebel Akhdar is not a specific place and this confused me a little at first. You have to keep this in mind so you won’t be disappointed. People can only view this mountain from a dirt road (only for experienced drivers if coming from Rustaq) while driving a 4 x 4. To be honest, it is hard to stop along the way, because you sometimes risk getting stuck. With that being said, the road goes through such amazing scenery that it would be a shame to miss. To enjoy it a little more, I recommend spending the night in one of the mountain's villages (I personally stayed at Al Hamra) making it possible to soak up a little more of this unique environment (rocky mountains punctuated by lush green plantations). For those who love trekking, it’s also possible to hike around the mountain as part of a 10-day trek.
