Located a few kilometers from the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez in southern Mexico, Sumidero Canyon, which reaches 1,000 meters in depth in places, is one of the wonders of the state of Chiapas. Once at the landing stage, I climbed aboard a little motorboat with space for around twenty people. As we followed the contours of this natural fault this little jaunt along the water gave me the opportunity to see and admire crocodiles, all kinds of species of birds, and the various wildlife that populates the banks.

Arranging an excursion to the Sumidero Canyon is easy. Numerous tour operators/travel agencies organise trips there on a daily basis from the very trendy town of San Cristobal de las Casas, or even from Tuxtla. So don't expect to find yourself on your own in a wild, natural environment. In fact it can even seem as if the numerous boats here (lanchas) are actually an integral part of the scenery!
