The Buddhist site of Sarnathis a popular excursion from Varanasi. It's there where Buddha came to preach after his enlightenment.

My suggestion:
If you have visited Bodhgaya during your trip to India, it's not worth you going to Sarnath because it would be superfluous, unless you have a particular interest for sacred places of Buddhism.
My review

Varanasi is the cradle of Hinduism and definitely the most effervescent town you will have the chance to discover in India. On the contrary, Sarnath is a crucial place in the history of Buddhism. It's interesting to tour it to better understand the differences between these two religions.

From Varanasi, it's easy to get to Sarnath on your own. It's not necessary to spend a night there.

In Sarnath, you peacefully settle in the park, amid Buddhist monks coming from around the world. They celebrate the place where Buddha gave his famous sermon after having come to Bodhgaya. You can see the impressive Dhamekh Stupa, 34 metres high (which is reminiscent of an Easter Bunny), as well as Chaukhandi Stupa, capped by a curious Mughal tower.
