Situated an hour away from Srinagar in the Himalayas, this is THE place to ski in Kashmir.

My suggestion:
Come here for a great day's skiing in winter.
My review

Gulmarg is in a stunning part the Himalayas. Overlooking the town of Srinagar and Lake Dhal, this area has been turned into a well equipped ski resort.

I was surprised by the number of both Indians and Westerners who come (from all over the world) to ski here during their vacations in India.

Gulmarg has a ski school as well as several shops, where you can hire equipment and find high quality goods. Hotels and restaurants have sprung up over recent years. It's probably the Himalayan resort that most resembles ski resorts in the Alps, even if the ski zones are smaller and the skiers less experienced!

Gulmarg in summer

Gulmarg is the ski resort in Kashmir, not far from Srinagar. It attracts masses of Indian tourists.

My suggestion:
Look up the weather conditions and the political situation in Kashmir because it isn't always possible to use the cable car to climb up the slopes.
My review

Skiing during a trip to India rather than in the Alps, why not? When I was sweating in Rajasthan, in a pre-monsoon heatwave, I would never have thought that I would have ended up in a ski resort a few weeks later, in the Kashmir mountains.

After I spoke with friends in Kolkata, I was certain that the political situation was stable at that time in this region bordering Pakistan. In Gulmarg, I couldn't put on my skis because it wasn't the right season, but I was able to go for a nice stroll in the pine forest.

In winter, the Indians, of whom the majority cannot ski, are satisfied with enjoying themselves in the snow after a stay on the Dal Lake, Srinagar, but avid winter sports fans can enjoy themselves on the very high mountains of Gulmarg. This excursion isn't really essential in summer, except for the pleasure of having seen a ski resort in India.
