Sonamarg Glacier is the first stop on the road between Srinagar, Kashmir and Leh in Ladakh.

My suggestion:
If you envisage a stay at Ladakh during your journey through India, take the road to Srinagar on the way and on the way back, return via Manali. Each one has a unique landscape.
My review

From Srinagar to Sonamarg the landscape changes constantly so that it is impossible to tear your eyes away from the windows of the jeep: hills, forests of conifers, stark mountains speckled with snow. This portion, well used by trucks, demands great skill from the driver when passing by. He must also juggle with...rock slides!

As in Gulmarg, Indian tourists discovered snow for the first time at the Thajiwas glacier in Sonamarg. Some local businesses offer them toboggan rides. For western travellers, the real wealth of Sonamarg lies in its incredible scenery.

The touching scenes of the lives of nomads and their herds complete the picture. I saw, for example, young children collecting water from the melting glacier. You will certainly see their camps around Sonamarg. The part which goes from the glacier to Dras is almost deserted. It's towards the Zoji La pass (3 529m) that you will find the most imposing mountains.
