San Pablo lake is high up in the mountains in the Otavalo region, in the north of Ecuador.

My suggestion:
Whilst on your trip to Ecuador, why not make it a joint visit to the lake and the market at Otavalo?
My review

In the Otavalo region I went hiking to San Pablo lake with my Ecuadorian friend, who wanted me to show me the heart of his country's indigenous culture.

To look at the area might remind you of the Auvergne region of France but my interest here was in meeting the locals in the little villages that we went through. I remember playing volleyball with some children in a little street, for example

As far as the lake itself goes, it didn't seem anything special to me, other than the fact that it's located at the foot of two imposing volcanos, Cayambe and Imbabura. Some tourists go windsurfing or kayaking. After San Pablo, we continued on our way to the waterfall at Peguche. I remember this well because at the time I had never seen such a tall waterfall.
