Tipping in Cambodia

The tip is left to your own unique judgement. It is very well appreciated, but not obligatory. You can nevertheless give a small token of your gratitude for services such as guided visits, massages etc...

According to your levels of satisfaction

You can leave a tip, the size of which is largely dictated by your satisfaction, in massage parlours as it's understood as something you should not ignore during your time in Cambodia!

If you use a driver, be that in a car or a tuk tuk, it's seen as good practice to give him 2 or 3 dollars more than the quoted price.

You should know that the locals don't tend to leave tips between themselves because, as previously explained, it's not a common practice like it is at home. It all depends on your budget and on your generosity, but in any case the recipient of a tip will always be pleasantly surprised as the wealth there tends to be at a lower level.

In a restaurant

Tipping is not something that has been accepted into the customs of the Khmers, but with the salaries being generally quite low, especially in the hospitality sector, it is always very much appreciated by the staff. However, it all depends on how satisfied you are, as it is perceived as a seal of approval.

The size of the tip not only depends on your budget, but also on the place you're eating in: it's not something that the staff will expect in local restaurants, but the larger restaurants might expect something extra at the end of the meal.

Visits

During your trip to Cambodia, if you decide to take a guide with you for the day or for a couple of days, especially if you visit the temples of Angkor, a tip is always welcome, above all if the language skills they demonstrated were good, if they were flexible, or if they took you to unique places, which many guides do. This could be 5 dollars each for the whole price. But, again, there is no obligation.
