Bonito (Brazil)

Bonito means 'beautiful' in Portuguese. It's still a relatively unknown place, probably because it's in an isolated area in the south of the country, near to the Bolivian border. So why here? For its crystal clear rivers, shoals of tropical fish and an underwater world that explodes with colour. You'll find yourself in a spectacular, natural aquarium!

It goes without saying, therefore, that snorkelling is the thing to do, if you want to meet the rivers' residents. The rivers are home to a diverse range of aquatic species and you may even be lucky enough to spot caimans! Another place to see (according to the tourist office) is the Lago Azul (Blue Lagoon Cave), with its midnight blue water. True, its stunning, but too touristy, which spoiled the whole 'natural' experience I was after. So not an essential item for your itinerary. Biking, exploring the forests' plant and animal life - you certainly won't get bored here!

Bonito merits its name and you won't regret including it during your tour of Brazil.
