The wild nature all around it, the bare rock, and the dizzying height all combine to create an almost fairytale effect, and for a moment I'd felt as if I'd been transported back to medieval times, to the very beginnings of Christianisation.</p> <p>The monastery itself, which dates from the 8th century, is quite wonderful, with its conical, stone-built domes standing out against the natural environment all around. And what makes it all the more wonderful is that you can combine a visit here with an incredible walk along the river down below and see some of the <a href="/armenia/">most beautiful scenery to be found anywhere in Armenia</a>. I therefore strongly recommend a trip to Saghmosavank Monastery to anyone visiting this part of the country.</p>
