I really liked my visit to Santa Elena before crossing the border to Brazil. It'a a city where lots of things seem to take place at the same time. Brazilians go to get petrol, gold diggers sell their finds, tourists plan their hikes to Gran Sabana National Park. It can seem chaotic at first, but everything runs very smoothly.
Santa Elena is a small, colourful city with lively streets where you can find good arepas stalls. Perfect for refuelling after a trip in the great outdoors. If during your trip to Venezuela you wish to hike to <a href="/venezuela/">Mount Roraima</a>, you need to go to Santa Elena. Other outings include pretty waterfalls, such as Jasper Creek, Agua Fria and Puerta del Cielo.
