Santa Elena de Uairen is a small city in the south of Venezuela, on the border with Brazil, from where hikers set off towards Mount Roraima.

My suggestion:
If you're travelling alone, try to join a group which exists already to see off on a hike to Mount Roraima.
My review

I really liked my visit to Santa Elena before crossing the border to Brazil. It'a a city where lots of things seem to take place at the same time. Brazilians go to get petrol, gold diggers sell their finds, tourists plan their hikes to Gran Sabana National Park. It can seem chaotic at first, but everything runs very smoothly.

Santa Elena is a small, colourful city with lively streets where you can find good arepas stalls. Perfect for refuelling after a trip in the great outdoors. If during your trip to Venezuela you wish to hike to Mount Roraima, you need to go to Santa Elena. Other outings include pretty waterfalls, such as Jasper Creek, Agua Fria and Puerta del Cielo.
