Just to the north of the Middle Atlas Mountains, where the routes between Meknes, Fes, Khenifra and Midelt meet, is Azrou. Azrou is a market town with a small, pleasant centre, but above all it's somewhere off the beaten path and away from the frenzy that you feel in the country's big towns. Azrou is famous for its Berber art and traditional rugs, but is astonishingly tourist free and a good base from which to explore the surrounding region, whether it be the mountains, where you may be lucky enough to meet Barbary Apes, or for some beautiful walks in the incredible cedar forest. I went to Azrou on my way from Midelt to Fes and I thought it was a pleasant, restful town, even if it doesn't have any really extraordinary sites to see. To sum up, its <a href="/morocco/">a nice place to stop off the beaten path</a> for anyone who has a little time to spare in Morocco.

I travelled several times to Azrou, once to go trekking for four days, something I will never forget... It is an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts. Here, as well, the inhabitants show you a warm welcome and I hope you will enjoy the tagine with quince, a real delight. Nestled at about 1200 metres above sea level in the heart of the Middle Atlas, the town of Azrou will appeal to you, I am sure. It is named after the rocky outcrop situated at its centre (Azrou means rock in Berber). It is surrounded by Oaks and Cedars which give it an incredible charm. Do not forget to go and see the Cèdre Gouraud (Cedar tree) which is almost 800 years old and is one of the emblems of the town, you will also be surprised by the monkeys which roam around.

Azrou is a pretty village situated in the Moroccan Middle Atlas around 90 km from Fez. It is an ideal place for beautiful walks and to meet friendly locals.

For nature lovers, Azrou is a destination to discover during a <a href="/morocco/">trip to Morocco</a>. I loved the magnificent pine and cedar forest scenery and having a picnic in the shade of the junipers. Azrou is the dream location to set off on a hike: consider being accompanied by a guide to visit the mountains, villages, valleys, waterfalls and other gorges of the Middle Atlas mountains. At a bend in a path, you'll perhaps have the pleasure of coming across Barbary apes: a regional species threatened with extinction. If you prefer to stay in Azrou, you can admire the quality of the Berber rugs it's famous for: woollen rugs in bright colours, where red, orange and indigo blue blend in geometric patterns of different shapes and sizes.
