Disabled travel in Mongolia

To make your holiday in Mongolia as enjoyable a possible, take the time to work out the options, including assistance and medical care.

A problematic issue

Whether it stems from its setting, lifestyle or history, Mongolia has specific problems when it comes to disability. Even though 4% of the population are registered as disabled, there is virtually no available medical or psychological care. An increase in road traffic has seen the number of accidents rise and consquently the number of victims who are amputees or who are paralysed. Many live in rural zones, far from any medical support. As a rule, medical care is underdeveloped in Mongolia and severely disabled people come off the worst. Care is rudimentary and way below Western standards.

The capital

During a trip to Mongolia staying in its capital could be tricky, as it lacks the appropirate infrastructure. Pavements are hazardous, tarmac lacking, traffic chaotic and the city feels somewhat anarchic. Getting around town could prove to be a stressful endeavour. It can be hard to find somewhere to stay if you're a wheelchair user and, in all honesty, many Mongolians find themselves stuck at home. For starters, hotels and restaurants do not usually have disabled access. The best way forward is to seek advice from a specialist agency.

Transport in Mongolia

Rural areas

By organising the basics in advance, disabled visitors can fully enjoy Mongolia. Its amazing landscapes can be explored in many ways, be it by car, on horseback or by camel and reliable, specialist travel agencies exist. Infrastructure is lacking when it comes to roads, isolated areas or rural zones. Nonetheless, there are still a number of fun activities that you can enjoy whilst touring Mongolia's amazing landscapes. But it does require careful planning and a certain tolerance once you're there. Before embarking on a holiday in Mongolia, you'll need to know what to expect.
