Makassar is the capital of the southern province of Sulawesi.

My suggestion:
Makassar is an ideal departure point for trips to the Toraja country! Only stay for the night - time enough to rest up, before exploring the surrounding region.
My review

Makassar is a noisy, polluted large town. Even so, there are a few things worth visiting such as the Sultan's Palace, which houses a museum. There's also a great view over the Bay of Tanjung Bunga. That said, this town is more of stopover, thanks to its airport, which serves Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Denpasar (Bali) - great if you want to tour the Toraja country, something I heartily recommend.

If you want to enjoy the buzz of a large Sulawesi town, then you can easily plunge yourself into its metropolitan frenzy.

I do suggest you head uphill to admire the stunning view of Tanjung Bunga Bay at sunset.
