Cemoro Lawang, on the heights of Probolinggo, is somewhere you must see during a trip to Java. The road to get there in the minibus is very twisty but in clear weather the views are magnificent. The village itself is not very attractive and there's nothing to visit there. But it is an excellent base for exploring Bromo Volcano and the mountains around it.
From the village there is a spectacular view of Bromo Volcano, especially at sun set. If you want to see the sun rise then you have to walk for about an hour out of the village, crossing over the fields and climb to the top of a hill. Unless you want to explore all the aspects of Bromo you only need to stay there one night, enough time to see the sun rise. It is short and tiring but at the moment the town has nothing to attract tourists.
