Lanquín itself doesn't have much to offer tourists during a trip to Guatemala, but it's perfectly placed, thanks to its proximity to Semuc Champey. At 70km from Cobán, it wasn't the distance that struck me! It took 3hrs by bus (the last 2 at a snail's pace) along a stony, rugged, moutainside road. The plus? The breathtaking views, which made up for the vile evangelical music that the driver blasted out during the journey.
Lanquín is a quiet little town, where you'll find some pleasant hotels, some of which are beside River Cahabón.
We were offered and took a tour of Lanquín's caves (I'd met up with my fiancé, having just come back from Europe). It may not be a must-see, but I still heartily recommend this visit, which is done at nightfall. The sight of thousands of bats flying around (and sometimes brushing against you) is nothing short of spectacular. Another highlight was coming across the weirdest of animals - an inoffensive kind of scorpion/spider hybrid that, nonetheless, sent shivers up my spine.
