A holiday in Guatemala absolutely must include a stay of several days at Lake Atitlán. When I came here during my tour of the world, I immediately fell under its spell. In the morning, the huge volcanoes are reflected in the blue waters of the lake. It's magical. Its reputation as the most beautiful lake in the world is not usurped at that moment. On the banks of the lake are small villages, each one as beautiful as all the others. On a practical note, I stayed at Panajachel. For those looking for more peace and quiet and isolation, I would recommend Santa Catarina Palopó, San Antonio Palopó, San Pedro, Santa Cruz, San Marcos or San Juan. In short, there are choices and each has something different to offer. Whether on land or on the water, climbing one of the volcanoes or simply contemplating, a stay at Lake Atitlán is always enchanting.
