Senkele Sanctuary  is located approximately thirty kilometres from Shashamene. It stretches out across just 58 km² and it's known for its Swayne's hartebeest population.

Senekele Sanctuary is really tiny, and it was only created to protect a species of antelope native to the region, which is threatened with extinction: Swayne's hartebeest. Of the 3,000 beasts which lived in the region, only 250 remain... A true carnage.
The advantage of this reserve is that you have an almost 100% chance of seeing these animals. There are also lots of birds there for those who love birdwatching and some warthogs... With a dry savannah vegetation, consisting mainly of African acacias.
I didn't think the trip was really worth the detour. There are more interesting places in the surrounding area, such as <a href="/ethiopia/">Yabelo Sanctuary</a>, Nechisar National Park around Lakes Abaya and Chamo, or the Stephanie fauna reserve around Lake Chew Bahir.
