When to visit North Ethiopia
From September to May.
The North is the most visited region of Ethiopia, and for a good reason: you'll be seduced by all the treasures you find there. Huge obelisks, remains of tombs or even churches, stand tall in the middle of stunning landscapes, You'll follow the Historic Route to discover this part of the country, which deserves several weeks of your time spent lingering there. The temperatures are pleasant all year round: just avoid summer as the rain can be heavy.
When to visit South Ethiopia
From October to March.
South Ethiopia has a longer rainy season than the rest of the country: so choose the period from October to May to go there. It's the region of Ethiopian lakes, where you can observe crocodiles, hippopotamuses and birds, and go on hikes surrounded by stunning landscapes. There you'll come across the Mursi and Karo tribes and discover their way of life.
When to visit East Ethiopia
From September to April.
Just like the West of the country, the East is no stranger to scorching heat, so avoid going during summer, at all costs. In this region, you'll discover numerous treasures. In particular you'll visit the fortified city of Harar, as well as the city of Dire Dawa. If you want to walk amidst nature, visit the volcanoes and wild animals at Awash National Park.
When to visit Addis Ababa and West Ethiopia
From September to May.
The West endures scorching heat: therefore, try not to go there in summer, to avoid discovering the region at it's most stiflingly hot temperature. Discover the country's capital, a very dynamic city full of contrasts, before setting off for the western part of the country. This little-visited region is worth the detour: you'll admire the forests, coffee plantations and the high plateaus, and you'll get to know its inhabitants.
When to go for a trek in Ethiopia
From September to May.
Ethiopia is a magnificent country which you won't fail to discover on a trek. Choose to explore the Bale massif and observe its wild animals, or the paths of the Menagesha National Forest. You can also visit Lalibela and the Tigray region, or even Simien National Park. Set off any time of the year, apart from summer (to avoid the rain).
