This volcanic furnace located at 136.8 metres above sea level, on the border with Eritrea, is a multicoloured plateau with an unearthly appearance surrounded by salt mountains. You can also visit the salt caravans and salt mine.

My suggestion:
Book your trip in a local agency to get the best price and join up with another group (can be organised with a trek on the Erta Ale volcano). An organised tour, with a military escort is compulsory.
My review

It is one of the most wonderful places that I have ever seen in my life! The plateau of the Dallol volcano is a geological curiosity with a range of incredible colours, from green, yellow, orange and white through to brown… a mineral miracle which looks like the surface of Mars.

Be careful where you walk as toxic, acid and corrosive materials are released from the ground. This expedition takes place under high level military surveillance. As soon as you set foot on the depression, Kalachnikov armed soldiers follow you closely.

The earth boils beneath your feet so beware of sulphuric acid splashes. The expedition takes two days and includes many stops: at Lake Assale, cathedrals and the spectacular salt mines…
