We arrived in Riohacha from Santa Marta, our plan being to stopover before heading to the La Guajira Desert. Once there, it took some time to find a cheap hotel, but we finally settled for a suitable place near the station.
Being there for only a day, we decided to watch the local fishermen come home with their hauls, which they then sold on the beach that runs the length of the town. We also met local Wayuu women for the first time when they joined in to sell baskets and colourful handicrafts.
The rest of town is nothing to write home about and we'd also advise you to not stay out on the streets too late at night. That said, there are some pretty good seafood restaurants by the beach, which could make for a fun, romantic evening out.
