Punta Gallinas is famous for being the most northerly place in Latin America. Punta Gallinas, in the department of Guajira, is one of the most beautiful places in Colombia. The way the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea contrast with the ochre sand dunes of the surrounding beaches in this area is like something out of a painting.
It's definitely worth making the trip to get here from Ríohacha! You have to do the journey in an all-terrain vehicle because after the first hour of travel the road turns into a sand-covered trail. Warning: it does get pretty bumpy! Hope your back is in good shape.
The combination of sea, land and sky at Punta Gallinas makes it a scenically glorious area. We had to take a glance at the map – our faithful companion throughout our trip to Colombia – to get an idea of just how far we'd come. And there we were, right at the northern tip of the extreme north of South America! At night we slept in hammocks beneath the stars, and during the day we toured around the region, stopping from time to time for something delicious to eat. Our absolute favourites were the lobster, fish and seafood. We certainly topped up our iodine levels! We also spent some time quietly observing the wildlife of this untamed, unspoilt area, such as the pelicans and pink flamingoes that come to wade at the water's edge here. To find out what else this extraordinary place has to offer, take a trip to Punta Gallinas and see it all for yourself!
