Alashan Youqi (AKA Ayouqi) is a medium sized town in Inner Mongolia and the prefecture/local government seat of the Alashan region.

My suggestion:
Don't forget to try some Alashan Youqi dishes! There are lots of Mongolian restaurants and the food is delicious!
My review

This town has not yet been hit by mass tourism and is an ideal stop between the Badain Jaran and Zhangye Deserts.

The Badain Jaran Desert is a must-see if you find yourself at Alashan Youqi. It's a blend of giant sand dunes and lakes that change color according to their mineral content. Head off in a 4WD; within a few hours you'll be in the heart of the desert and able to follow several trails. You can also go native and take a camel ride!

One thing for your itinerary, if you're leaving from Alashan Youki: Zhangye and the largest sleeping Buddha in China. Carved in 1098, it's a staggering 35m long! Several terracotta Arhats and Qing Dynasty frescoes keep him company. He's one giant Buddha you should meet!
