The Badain Jaran Desert, is on the Alashan Plateau, covering a large part of Inner Mongolia in China.

My review

A natural paradise, that was undiscovered for a long time; an incredible blend of sand and water in a magnficent setting. Covering 49,000 square kilometers, it's the third largest desert in China. Its immense sand dunes are some of the highest in the world and can reach up to 500m! You'll feel like you're on top of a mountain, hillside or cliff.

The desert is also home to a hundred or so 'mystery lakes' - immense stretches of both saline and fresh water. The colors will blow you away - a natural blend of colbalt blue, emerald green, pink ochre and scarlet red.

It's also well worth exploring the region's cultural heritage. The Cave of a Thousand Buddhas at Mogao and the medieval fortress Jiayuguan are must-sees.
