About 30 kilometers south of Guiyang, in the province of Guizhou, Qingyan village gets its name from Mont Qingyan which means "greencliff" or "green rock".

My review

This ancient military outpost was converted into a flourishing market town and relay station where the merchants of the region met.

Despite its small size, Qingyan has a lot of beautiful heritage, beginning with the small, brightly colored, many shaped houses. Among the many unmissable sites are the doors commemorating Zhao Lilun, which are a true masterpiece and full of history. There are several restaurants and tea shops in the village, as well as shops selling local wares and traditional clothing. Qingyan is also special because four religions live peacefully together there : Buddhism, Taoism, Catholicism, and Protestantism.

The ancient town of Qingyan in Guizhou province, is a must-see.

My review

Built for military purposes in 1378, during the Ming dynasty, this fortified town is nowadays an open-air history book.

It's also a place that is representative of the region's multiculturalism (4 religions live peacefully together there) and the evolution in architecture up until the Qing dynasty. There are lots of pretty monasteries, temples, pagodas, gardens and palaces to visit.

Don't miss the encircling walls, built on a cliff, the 4 doors at the cardinal points of the compass, and the doors commemorating Zhao Lilun, emblems of the town and a masterpiece. Look carefully at the stone and wood sculptures that cover them. They take you straight back into the past with their references to numerous myths and legends
