Eighty percent of its land area is hilly and mountainous. The imposing Xunjang River flows through it, hence its nickname "city of water".

This large port is located at a point where various national highways meet, making it possible to reach it by bus from a number of cities, including Nanning, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.
