The Miao village of Shiqiao is about two hours by road from Kaili, in the lovely Guizhou Province.

My review

Famous for producing hand-made paper using traditional techniques, this is a fascinating stopover for travelers exploring southwestern China.

For over a 1,000 years, villagers have manufactured white or colored paper that is 100% natural, used for calligraphy or exported to an international market. Out of the 100 or so families that live in the village, almost half are considered to be masters of the craft. Visitors can tour workshops, learn about this ancient manufacturing technique and admire the finished results.

In addition to its famous product, Shiqiao's surroundings are also well worth the detour. Nestled in a maze of rice fields, the pointy roofs of its wooden houses dot the landscape, whilst a pretty river meanders across the village. Shiqiao is both a relaxing and instructive gem!
