Jianchuan, a wood carving paradise, is found on the Lijiang - Dali road in the rolling hills of Yunnan.

My suggestion:
I highly recommend the hike that leads through the One Thousand Lions Mountain, a shady trek, dotted with statues and carvings depicting lions of all shapes and sizes.
My review

Little known to both the Chinese and foreigners alike, Jianchuan is, nonetheless, well worth your while. Its artistic heritage, legendary tales, scenery and sculpted wooden facades are an ode to a fascinating past.

From Jianchuan you can easily reach the pretty village of Shaxi and, from there, explore the Shibaoshan cave complex and the Baoxiang Temple. Every Friday a huge market is held, where local minorities, in particular from the Bai and Yi people, come down the mountain to buy and sell wares.
