The Shaolin Monestary is at the heart of Mount Songshan. It's the sacred, founding place of numerous martial arts such as kung-fu, karate and taekwondo...

My review

One the most beautiful Buddhist temples and a major Chinese tourist destination.

Built in the 13th Century, it's known throughout the world as a mediation and teaching center where you can learn painting and calligraphy. The site is home to the stunning Pagoda Forest, caves, The Hall of 1000 Buddhas, temples and a wonderful garden.

Don't miss the Damo Shadow Stone, a cave wall where you can perceive the shadow of a monk, Damo, the creator of kung-fu. Legend says that when he was refused access to the temple, he meditated in this cave and his shadow became imprinted on the rock face.

With its forests and mountain reliefs, this monastery is a perfect picture postcard.
