Fengdu, or rather "Fengdu Ghost City", sits on a mountain on the banks of the Yangtze River in the municipality of Chongqing.

My review

This city of myths and legends is particularly popular with Chinese tourists. It constitutes an interesting and unusual place to visit for anyone taking a river cruise between Chongqing and Yichang.

Fengdu has a history stretching back some 2,000 years. This Taoist religious site, which dates from the time of the Tang dynasty, owes its reputation as a "Ghost City" to a combination of the names of two officials of the imperial court, Yin Changsheng and Wang Fangping "(Yinwan" means "King of Hell"), who came to Ming Mountain to practice Taoist teachings. Today, the site is dedicated to the gods and demons of the next world. In addition to the folkloric aspect, you learn a lot about the role of ghosts in Chinese culture and Chinese beliefs about the social structure of the underworld during a visit here.
