Astonishing fact: each village in the surrounding area wants to prefix its name with Huangshan Shi in order to highlight its proximity to this spectacular mountain chain.
Tunxi has a population of around 150,000, and though that's not many by Chinese standards, it is a considerable amount for the region. Like many towns and cities offering a mixture of both the modern and the traditional, its main attraction in terms of heritage is its old street, "Lao Jie ". The surface of the street is cobbled with stones and along it stand old, Huizhou style houses (Song, Ming and King dynasty). This is where the main tourist area is to be found, with its souvenir stalls, tea houses, and an old apothecary, which has its own medicinal plant library.
There are also museums to visit, including the Tunxi Museum, which has a collection of antique furniture as well as paintings and calligraphy on display. The Wancuilou Museum, by contrast, is dedicated to local architecture.
