Founded more than 2,000 years ago during the Han dynasty, the capital of Gansu province is considered to be the geographical center of China.

My suggestion:
If you aren't pressed for time then take a detour to the amazing Bingling Buddhist caves, 70km from Lanzhou. These caves, which can be accessed by boat, are among the oldest in China.
My review

Once a key stage on the Silk Road, nowadays it is often chosen as the point of departure for tourist circuits that are following this famous route. Less gloriously, Lanzhou is also one of the most polluted cities in the country.

As well as being an important rail and air hub, Lanzhou has some pretty sites which merit being known. It's lovely walking along the banks of the Yellow River or in the gardens, before climbing the hill to the White Pagoda or the Five Springs mountain park.
