A crossing point on the road joining Guizhou to the provinces of Hunan in the east and Guangxi in the south, it's worth stopping at Rongjiang for a while to take the time to explore the many villages around and their superb ruins.
There are numerous things to discover as we are on the frontier between the lands of the Miao and the lands of the Dong. Rongjiang has one unique and symbolic monument: the temple of the Miao chief, the only building in the world which commemorates the Miao's ancestors.
There's nothing like a trip to the villages around to really get a feel for Dong culture, discover their language, their traditions, and their marvelous architecture. If I have to mention only one must-see village then it has to be Chejiang, which has a spectacular drum tower, (the biggest Dong tower in the world).
