Capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax is a pretty harbour town that makes for a great day out. You can tour it by foot: the centre of town the park, the port and the fortress. Halifax is typical of the lovely provincial townsthat I particularly enjoyed visiting during a <a href="/canada/">trip to Canada</a>.   If you stay in or around Halifax for a few days, you can walk along part of the Lighthouse Route. This runs along the coast to Digby, where you can then catch a boat to St. John in New Brunswick. It's also the perfect way to visit quaint fishing villages such as Shelburne and Lockeport. The best known lighthouse is Peggy's Cove and I managed to snap some great shots at sunrise.

Built on a human scale, but with some impressive buildings, Halifax is a fun, cosmopolitan town. I spent a day there and loved its British feel, particularly around the port - one of the largest in North America and home to a big Canadian naval base. I really enjoyed the 2km walk along the docks and a visit to its port-side market. The town is also famous for its eclectic musical scene. A little known fact: it was here that corpses from the Titanic were brought... Consquently the town is home to numerous victims' graves. If you like the great outdoors, then you'll find the Nova Scotia coast stunning.

A town with 360,000 habitants, situated to the north east of Canada, this is an important harbour town and home to a large, reputable university.
