There is no better way to discover the treasures of <a href="/peru/"> Cusco </a> and its surroundings than to go on a trek. The trek of the Inca Trail (with the visit of the Machu Picchu) is one of the most highly prized by travellers, but there are other circuits that are worth the trouble like the Ausangate trek. To get to this mountain at an altitude of 20 669 ft., allow 3 to 5 days depending on the trek offered. Departure is from Cusco and the walk starts at Tinqui.
Along the way, you will discover the charming Andean village of Pacchanta. Located at the foot of Ausangate, at an altitude of 13 779 ft., Pacchanta is a hamlet that is typical of the Andean high plateaus . Its inhabitants mainly make a living from agriculture and alpaga breeding, the wool of which is used by the village women to weave rugs and tunics. Before it is spun, the wool is dyed with natural colourants including one that is present in the cochineal insect. Alpaga fibre is also used to make rope and bags used by Andean workers.
An Ausangate trek will give you a chance to immerse yourself in Andean culture. Between green valleys, mischievous llamas, remote villages and warm Indians, the scenery you pass through and the people you meet are really exceptional.
