I wanted to explore the legendary <a href="/mongolia/">Yolyn Am ice field</a>, one of the Gobi's biggest tourist attractions, during my holiday in Mongolia, Visiting the gorge is a surprising experience, as you'll arrive in shorts and a T-shirt, yet find yourself in the middle of glaciers. It's a pleasant and refreshing microclimate. The sun reflects off the icy surface, diffusing yellow and blue tones. As you continue along the gorge, the landscape evolves into large, grassy plains. Along the way I stumbled upon animal skeletons - a relatively common occurence in the country - as well as ovoos (Mongolian shamanic stone cairns) and small, mouse-like animals called pikas. Further on still, you'll find a little stream where you can go for a paddle. Being a lovely location, the site attracts tourists and Mongolians alike, who love to come here to unwind and spend some time with their families. Once evening fell, I pitched my tent away from the site. I had the impression that I was completely alone. My night was cold and scary - I was sure there were wolves close by! If you're nervous, you'll be pleased to know there are yurt camps where you can stay.
