The Cordillera Real is located east of La Paz. This chain of mountains, known as the Himalayas of the New World, is a real paradise for trekking enthusiasts. If you're in the La Paz region and you like hiking and altitude, it's an opportunity to "climb your first 6,000 metres." Indeed, the star peaks of the Cordillera Real all reach that height: Illampu (6,368 metres), Ancohuma (6,427 metres), Chachacomani (6,074 metres) and Huayna Potosí (6,088 metres).
Crossing the Cordillera Real is one of the most amazing experiences that you can have while on holiday in Bolivia. You'll need three weeks if you want to cross the whole mountain range. However, you can partially discover the Cordillera Real in 1 or 2 weeks.
We chose the longest crossing (20 days) and arrived at Laguna San Francisco halfway through the trek. Surrounded by glaciers, the beautiful lagoon reflects the nearby snow-capped peaks. The next ones you come across are Laguna Kacha, Laguna Carizal and Laguna Chojna Quta.
