Situated at an altitude of 5,163 m, straddling Chile (province of Tamarugal) and Bolivia (province of Sur Lipez), Irruputuncu Volcano is a small stratovolcano which has the particularity of having two craters. This volcano, whose first eruption took place in 1995, is considered to be active. Moreover, the south crater of Irruputuncu Volcano sometimes emits smoke and gas.
This small volcano is known as one of the most recent in this region, located in northern Chile. Scientists estimate its age at approximately 10,000 years. Although it's not very elevated, Irruputuncu Volcano isn't a volcano known for trekking. However, the province of Sur Lipez offers beautiful strolls in a magnificent panorama of huge deserts, multicoloured lagoons, sparkling white salt flats and all types of wild animals. For me, it was one of the most beautiful regions in the country.
