Grand Baie (Mauritius)

The most important tourist destination of the island, Grand Baie is an essential visit during a trip to Mauritius. The tourists who go there are unanimous: if you are looking for turquoise water, white sand and buffets of fresh fruit and other delights of Mauritian gastronomy, you’ve come to the right place!

I must confess that it is not my cup of tea. I’m not a big fan of hotels that invade the coast and the throng of street peddlers with their sarongs, sunglasses and everything you could need for a day at the seaside.

Of course, Grand Baie lends itself to bathing, kite surfing and tubing. And of course, there are many textile and jewellery shops and fine restaurants. All the same, I have a definite preference for the places frequented by the Mauritians themselves rather than by tourists, which is why I prefer the south of the island.
