Just a few steps from the sea, the cultural landscape of Le Morne juts into the sea like a last bastion against the waves: a watchtower facing west against potential invaders from Reunion Island. This peninsula has the particularity of offering some fairly physical hiking under a blazing sun and absolute relaxation in turquoise waters at the ideal temperature.
As for Le Morne mountain, it is the stuff of legend and history, because it was here that runaway Maroon slaves concealed themselves from their exploiters. This basaltic monolith also offers numerous caves where you can hide away from searching eyes and bad weather. During a trip to Mauritius, you will encounter few places that have inspired so much hope. This mountain has even been called the "Republic of the Maroons" as a symbol of their emancipation.
